Gopal Rai is a Cabinet Minister in Delhi, with Environment, Forest and wildlife, Development and General Administration Department under him. He is also the Convener of the Delhi state unit of the Aam Aadmi Party.
As a student leader in Lucknow University, he was part of several campaigns against corruption and crime in college campuses. As a consequence of his activism, he was was shot and suffered some injuries, paralysing him partially. However, that didn’t deter him from continuing to fight against injustice.
Rai has delivered on the promises made by the party in the run up to the election. His Ministry’s decision to raise the minimum wages in Delhi was hailed as a historic move. “The condition of the labourers continues to remain pathetic 70 years after the country gained freedom. In Delhi too, which is the country’s capital, the minimum wage was just about Rs 9,000,” he said. The minimum wages for unskilled persons are now Rs 14,052, with those for semi-skilled and skilled persons at Rs 15,471 and Rs 17,033 respectively.
After taking over as Delhi Convener in May 2017, he has initiated an organisational overhaul in the state.
