Net content checking and Tolerance


The checking of net content should ordinarily be carried out manufacturer/packer premises to curb this violation at root level. The detailed procedure of net content checking has been laid down in Rule 24 of Standard of Weights & Measures (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 1977. The following points are kept in mind while carrying out the checking:

a) Total no. of sample packages to be weighed/measured in terms of size of batch.

b) Equipments of working standards to be ordinarily used to determine the net content.

c) Average tare weight to be taken into account for calculating net content out of gross weight of the package.

d) Where the commodity is in liquid form, the factors of specific gravity and other environmental factors to be considered.

e) Whether the firm is having packer /manufacturing / importers registration from W & M  Department.

f) All measurements / weighment and the results should be recorded in proper data sheet.

Action on the result report – If the statistical average weight of sample packages or the weight of any package shows an error in deficiency greater than the prescribed tolerance on that product, the positive action according to provisions of the Act should be taken –

(i) The packages of batch to be seized and order for refilling to be issued.

(ii) Compounding of penal amount or forwarding the complaint to court of law as the case may be.
