Shri Najeeb Jung

Shri Najeeb Jung was born on 18th January, 1951 in Delhi. He did his schooling from St. Columba’s School, Delhi and graduation from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi. He did his M.A. in History from University of Delhi and an M.Sc. in Social Policy and Planning in Developing Countries from the London School of Economics, U.K. 

He joined the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) in 1973, Madhya Pradesh Cadre.  He served in Madhya Pradesh in various capacities which include Collector and District Magistrate, M.D. of the M.P. Oil Seeds Cooperative Development and the M.P. Finance Corporation.  He served as Private Secretary to Shri Madhavrao Scindia, Minister for Railways and was Director, Department of Steel, Government of India and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India.

Shri Jung has worked as Senior Advisor and Principal Energy Specialist from 1995 to 1999 at the Asian Development Bank. He has been a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, Oxford University (1999 to 2002).  He returned to Asian Development Bank (2002-05) and was responsible for Restructuring the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources in Afghanistan. He rehabilitated and redeveloped the gas production system as well as the natural gas distribution system and introduced modern marketing for the sale of oil products.

Shri Jung returned to the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies in 2005. He has advised international oil and gas companies on future development and published two books on the development of the natural gas industry.

Shri Jung returned to India in 2008 and was appointed the Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia in 2009. A prolific writer and regular columnist in national and international newspapers, he has published a book in Urdu, titled Fikr-o-Aagahi and another one in English, titled Sting of a Bee.

His most recent book is The Political Economy of Energy and Growth, published by Oxford University Press, which deals with energy issues in India and South Asia. Shri Najeeb Jung’s forthcoming work is on the politics of the Afghan-Pakistan region.

Shri Jung has been Chairman/Member of several Committees constituted by Government of India. He has been conferred the ‘Doctor of Letters’ (Honoris Causa) by Jamia Millia Islamia in 2013.

Shri Najeeb Jung took over as the 20th Lt. Governor, Government of N.C.T. of Delhi, on July 9th 2013.
