From Editor's Desk :

Dear All,

We are delighted to present the first edition of the E-newsletter “Homoeopathic Pulse”, which is dedicated to propagation of “EVIDENCE BASED RESEARCH ACTIVITIES” in the field of Homoeopathy. The release of this newsletter coincides with the opening of the 98th Homoeopathic Dispensary at Delhi Govt. Health Centre, Bazar Guliyan, Jama Masjid, Delhi.

Govt. of NCT of Delhi offers a diverse natural observatory for identification of various health indicators, learning and implementation of effective health policies and systems.

By launching the cafeteria approach in health care sector, the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of NCT of Delhi has set a precedent by providing AYUSH and allopathic systems of medicine to function under one roof along. This approach has provided the benefit of choosing therapy of choice to the patient and opened a door for communication between practitioners of different therapeutic specialties. This further widens the horizon for comparative research studies and clinical trials.

The Homoeopathic wing of Directorate of ISM & H has now 98 functioning homoeopathic dispensaries/ units in Delhi out of which 96 are co-located with allopathic dispensaries/ hospitals providing Preventive, Promotive & Curative Homoeopathic Health Care facilities. These dispensaries/ hospital units enjoy patronage of nearly 18 lacs patients every year.

A research study during the period of 1999-2000 and February -March 2003 by Dr. RK Manchanda and Dr. Mukul Kulshreshtha has also established the cost effectiveness of these dispensaries in comparison to allopathic counterparts and can be seen at our website

The directorate also fosters homoeopathic education at graduate and post-graduate level through two homoeopathic institutions, which admits nearly 150 candidates every year.

Dilli Homoeopathic Anusandhan Parishad, is an autonomous body of Govt. of Delhi, which was constituted to initiate, aid, develop and coordinate research in Homoeopathy since 1998.

Evidence based medicine is the need of the hour and in order to ensure the propagation of genuine research/ academic papers and authentic cases of Homoeopathy, “Homoeopathic Pulse”, a departmental E-newsletter is being initiated to be published quarterly, which shall provide a platform to document clinical case studies and its research activities. I hope it will prove to be beneficial to all practitioners, students of Homoeopathy, who are willing to publish their work in a peer review journal or to present their cases in various International and National symposium.

The editorial committee members of the E-newsletter are a dedicated lot, some of whom are well known amongst the homoeopathic fraternity.

The launching issue has National News, International News, significant advances in the field of Homoeopathy that have been made in the recent past, literature, job opportunities etc.

It is really heartening to see all these contributions. The editorial board appreciates the time and efforts that have been devoted by the different contributors and would like to thank them all. Any suggestion & criticism towards the improvement of the E-newsletter contents are always welcome.

We would specially like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. A.K. Walia, Hon’ble Health Minister, Govt. of NCT of Delhi and Mr. S.C.L. Das, Secretary (H&FW) for their support and encouragement towards conceptualization of this E-newsletter and for propagation of Homoeopathic stream.

In the end, I would like to say that “Every Person is the right person to act. Every moment is the right moment to begin”. The time to act now is for “EVIDENCE BASED HOMOEOPATHY”

Let us all work together for the cause of homoeopathy. Hail Homoeopathy! Hail Hahnemann!

Dr. Surender Verma

Description:Talk on "Homeopathy Nanoparticles" by Dr. Shantaram Kane.

Describing it as a “fascinating observation,” a recent paper by IIT Bombay researchers has been lauded in an editorial “Do serial dilutions really dilute?” of the premier journal “Homeopathy”. The paper provides a key insight into the possible basis of Homeopathy, a scientific explanation of which has so far eluded researchers due to its use of extreme dilution, well beyond that predicted by atomic theory, by which the presence of any active starting active ingredient is ruled out. Update on Repertory:

Dr S.K. Pandey  M.D.(Hom),Reader, Deptt of Repertory,NHMC&H

Diabetes mellitus is a disease which is known to everybody nowadays. It is to be noted with astonishment that DM has an attracting global importance as it is rocking the world as a non-infectious epidemic/pandemic. “SUGAR” is the common name given to DM by the Indian layman. Actually, it comprises a group of common metabolic disorders that share the phenotype of hyperglycemia (increased level of glucose in blood plasma). Nowadays, it is one of the leading dietetic irregularities, metabolic dysfunction, lack of exercise, stress, and busy lifestyle. causes of morbidity and mortality because Diabetes mellitus causes secondary pathophysiologic changes in the multiple organ system. Most likely, the complications of DM are adult blindness; non-traumatic lower extremity amputations (diabetic foot); end stage renal disease (ESRD); neuropathy etc. In the forthcoming days it is presumed to increase day by day due to an increase in factors contributing to hyperglycemia.

As Homoeopathy is not a science of therapeutics, it is concerned with totality of symptoms or individuality. As regarding the cure of DM by homoeopathic medicine, the individual needs to undergo complete miasmatic and constitutional therapy in the very early stage.

However the various repertories may be taken into consideration for ready reckoner for various complaints associated with diabetes.Read more.....

Update on Organon: 1

Lecturer, Department of Organon of Medicine, Nehru Homoeopathic Medical College, New Delhi

The homoeopathic posological principle of minimum has long been ridiculed by the conventional system of medicine and the very concept of BIPHASIC ACTION OF MEDICINE dependent upon the DOSAGE of medicine has been a subject of scorn. However the study of conventional medicine on the action of Arsenic as a carcinigen in moderate doses and its anti-cancer activities in low doses corroborates the therapeutic utility of homoeopathic LAW OF MINIMUM.

Arsenic has for long been known as a carcinogen and epidemiological data has shown that inorganic arsenic exposure can cause cancer of the lung and skin. However paradoxically, research reports from China have described the induction of clinical and hematologic responses by arsenic trioxide in low doses in patients with de novo and relapsed acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) The results of these observational studies have been confirmed in randomized clinical trials in the U.S. whereby one of the researchers Dr. Soignet of the Leukemia Service of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center stated that “low doses of arsenic trioxide” are “standard treatment for acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) in the relapsed disease’. These researches have brought into focus the biphasic action of medicines dependent on dosage of medicine and corroborate the significance of Hahnemann’s posological concept of MINIMUM. Update on Organon: 2

Dr.Amar Bodhi, MD(Hom)

Lecturer, Department of Organon of Medicine, B.R.Sur Homoeopathic Medical College

Prophets, philosophers, benevolent physicians, pioneering scientists and phenomenal linguists are rare. Rarer still are scholars blended with all the aforesaid attributes. One such prodigy was Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann, the Father of Homoeopathy.

His most famed achievement is the discovery of a scientific system of medicine. But he has many other contributions with rightful claim. Quite early in his life, he had mastered German, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Spanish, Arabic, English, Syrian, Italian and French. The translations from different languages to German are his ingenious literary gifts to his fatherland. His inclination for chemistry, bestowed that science with two important inventions: Hahnemann’s preparation of Mercury and Hahnemann’s Wine Test.

Close to the heart of a man is his health. Every medical philosophy is criticized for being indulgent about diseases but insensitive of health. Dr. Hahnemann and his homoeopathy soothe not only the pain of sickness but also furnish the armour against it in health. Here are some glimpses of his wisdom. Read more…..

Significance of back pain

Back pain represents a key public health problem. It is one of the most frequent complaint encountered in homoeopathic consultations and is an important cause of reduced work efficiency or even complete abstinence from work.

Structures in the back

The back comprises vertebral spine, interconnecting nerves, muscles, ligaments, and tendons, all of which can be a source of pain. While examining a patient of back pain it is important to consider the seat of origin of pain because it may help in exploring some of the serious underlying diseases. Pain felt in the back may arise from structures in the back, or it may arise from an abdominal or pelvic viscera and is referred to the back. Pain-sensitive structures in the spine include the periosteum of the vertebrae, dura, facet joints, annulus fibrosus of the intervertebral disk, epidural veins, and the posterior longitudinal ligament. Diseases of these diverse pain-sensitive structures may explain many cases of back pain without involvement of spinal nerve root.

    Types of back pain

Local pain in back is caused by stretching of pain-sensitive structures that compress or irritate sensory nerve endings. The site of the pain is near the affected part of the back.

Pain referred to the back may arise from abdominal or pelvic viscera. The pain is usually described as primarily abdominal or pelvic but is accompanied by back pain and is usually unaffected by posture.

Pain of spinal origin may be located in the back or referred to the buttocks or legs. Diseases affecting the upper lumbar spine tend to refer pain to the lumbar region,

groin, or anterior thighs. Diseases affecting the lower lumbar spine tend to produce pain referred to the buttocks, posterior thighs, or rarely the calves or feet.

Radicular back pain is typically sharp and radiates from the spine to the leg within the territory of a nerve root. Coughing, sneezing or voluntary contraction of abdominal muscles may elicit the radiating pain. The pain may increase in posture that stretch the nerves and nerve root.

Pain associated with muscle spasm, although of obscure origin, is commonly associated with many spine disorders. The spasms are accompanied by abnormal posture, taut paraspinal muscles, and dull pain. Read more…….

Allergic rhinitis is a common clinical condition characterized by paroxysms of sneezing, rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction, and itching of the eyes, nose and palate triggered by allergens. It is also frequently associated with post nasal drip, cough, irritability and fatigue.

Allergic asthma is another common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, airflow obstruction and bronchospasm which is also triggered by allergens. The symptoms include wheezing, cough, chest tightness and shortness of breath; clinical signs include prolonged expiration, a rapid heart rate (tachycardia) and additional lung sounds. Most of these patients get worse after exercising in cold air or after inhaling any type of smoke, dust, fumes, and sometimes strong smells.

Allergic rhinitis and asthma are linked by epidemiological, histological[1], physiological[2] and immunopathological[3] characteristics and by a common therapeutic approach. Read more…

Review of Books :

Classical  Homoeopathy For an Impatient World Rapid Classical Prescribing

Author: Dr Subrata K. Banerjea

Publisher: B.Jain Publishers(P)  LTD

Title  of the  book is itself  suggestive  of its appropriateness  in todays  fast paced life  where everybody  is restless, impatient ,  intolerant  and is eagerly  desirous of relief  or change.

This book is the result of years of experience of Dr S.K. Banerjea  who is  a  fourth generation  homoeopath from his  illustrious family---his great grandfather  was proprietor, C Ringer  and company, Calcutta, while his grandfather  was founder of Bengal  Allen Homoeopathic Medical college  and  Hospital. His uncle Dr N  K Banerjea is the president, homoeopathic state  faculty, west Bengal  and  Indian Homoeopathic Association.

Dr  S K Banerjea,  is an internationally renowned  homoeopath  and  author of many acclaimed books,  and is acknowledged as an authority on miasmatic prescribing. As a result of  his  extensive  experience of practice in India  and abroad   he  has evolved  a hexagonal  approach towards reaching  a  SIMILIMUM  efficiently  and  quickly. These include emphasis on aetiologies; totality of physical symptoms; emotional symptoms; behaviour, gesture, posture hobbies; miasmatic totality and homeopathic generalities. This  approach is  not  something alien  rather it  is time  tested  and  repeatedly verified  and  has  been  practised  in the past  also  by  eminent homoeopaths  ie Drs Kent ,Hering, Lippe Tyler  and   Nash  etc.

Each drug  is described  with  a  graphic representation with their physical  themes  ,physical  clinicals, mental essence, ,mental  clinicals, sphere of action, catch words: keynotes, keywords for personality profiles, potency of choice, miasmatic preferences  as  well as  clinical  tips. This  approach  helps in  clear  understanding of the  drug in different perspectives.

The contents of the book are  divided under nineteen  sections.  Section  one  deals with the drug  dependants  and non drug dependant cases   with their modern classical  miasmatic  approach. This is  followed  by  detailed  case  taking  Performa which  covers almost  all the  aspect of  a patient  . Then we have tips on potency  ,doses  and  personal  experiences and how  to  make  acute  prescribing. Some sections describe  different  groups  of  medicines, polychrests. There is  a very interesting chapter on  what to do when  well  selected medicines  including  heavy  nosodes fail?  He has covered psychiatry  and  mental essence ,post traumatic stress  disorders,  vaccination  and  consequences, ,repertory of personality profiles,  recreational  drug  dependant  cases  and  scope of  drug  de addiction he has taken up the csope of mother tinctures  .

I personally find  the last  chapter most  interesting  as  well as  contemporary  as  it is    about  the  organopathic medicines  through which  one  can  handle drug dependant cases   and gradually  wean off the  conventional   medicines.  Author  has shared  all his life time  experiences  with utmost  honesty   and  sincerity  for  the  benefit of  the  homoeopathic fraternity. We should  make the  best  use  of  his  suggestions  .

It is  a  very  useful  and  informative  book. Author has  presented the  subject in a  very  simple  and  easily comprehensible  manner which enhances  its  utility  not  only  for  the  practitioners  but also  for  the  students  of  homoeopathy  as well.

Medical Quotes & Jokes :

"Our art requires no political lever, no worldly decorations in order to become something.  It grows gradually, at first unrecognized, surrounded as it were by all manner of weeds which luxuriate around it, from an insignificant acorn to a sapling, soon its summit will overtop the rank weeds.  Patience! It is striking deep its roots into the earth, it is increasing in strength imperceptibly but all the more surely and will in its own time grow into an oak of God, which no longer is shaken by storms, spreads out its branches into all regions that suffering mankind may be healed under its beneficent shade."

Dr. Samuel Hahneman, Father of Homoeopathy

“Homeopathy cures a greater percentage of cases than any other method of treatment. Homeopathy is the latest and refined method of treating patients economically and non-violently.”

                     - Mahatma Gandhi

Homeopathy did not merely seek to cure a disease but treated a disease as a sign of disorder of the whole human organism. This was also recognized in the Upanishad which spoke of human organs as combination of body mind and spirit. Homoeopathy would pay an important part in the Public Health of the country along with other systems. Medical facilities in India are so scanty that Homoeopathy can confidently visualize a vast field of expansion.

Dr. S. Radha Krishnan - Former President, Govt. of India

Humour in medicine:

Doctor, are you sure I'm suffering from pneumonia? I've heard once about a doctor treating someone with pneumonia and finally dying of typhus.

Remember the movie “Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam” ? There is a Johnny Lever’s dialogue “London me to chote chote bachhe bhi English bolte hai”.

Yes, in Bengal, children learn Bengali; in Kerala, Malayalam; in most of North India Hindi and so on.

But interestingly, they use same language all over the world as long as they are infant; roughly, up to one year of age.

So, what is the name of that language?

Crying : From Birth to one month of age. (They do not forget it, even when grown up)

Cooing : From one month to 4-5 months of age. Cooing in a vowel like sound, particularly like ‘oooo….’, ‘aaaa….’, ‘iiii….’ Etc. When the infant coos, the people around him/her talk back by repeating the sound and by making some new sounds. In turn, the infant respond with more cooing. Such dialogues become more frequent with each passing day. This promotes the development of an emotional bond between caregiver and the infant. Later cooing improves, child practices consonant sounds like p, t, b, m, d by combining them with vowels , they produce sounds like  ‘beee….’, ‘maaaaa’ etc.

Babbling : Between 6 to 10 months the infant begins to babble. He/She repeats syllables like ‘ma’, ‘da’, ‘ki’, ‘ne’ … over and over again and we hear sound like “dadada…” , “kikikiki….” , “mamama…” , It improves as time progresses. When the child babbles “mamama…” or “bababa…..” , the parents feels the child is saying ‘mama’ to mean mother and ‘baba’ to mean father. But these are not really words because children use it even in absence of mother and father. The infant’s utterance will become words only when he/she begins to use them consistently to refer to a particular object/person. Of course child still uses crying as way of expression.

The first Words: Sometimes around one year of age the child learns a vocabulary of 4 to 8 words. Now you can differentiate whether he/she is speaking Hindi, Bengali, and Malayalam or of course.... English! (Probably you are in London)!

“The physician’s highest and only calling is to make the sick healthy, to cure, as it is called.”

“The highest ideal of cure is the rapid, gentle and permanent restoration of health; that is, the lifting and annihilation of the disease in its entire extent in the shortest, most reliable, and least disadvantageous way, according to clearly realizable principles.”

Samuel Hahnemann, Organon of the Medical Art1, Aphorisms 1 and 2

These wise words are the opening of the Organon, Homoeopathy’s bible and the culmination of the life work of its founder, Samuel Hahnemann. Written 150 years ago, they speak volumes about the state of medicine today. In fact, the public at large and also the medical profession itself are becoming increasingly aware that modern medicine must come up with new means and new ideas for tackling chronic diseases. Despite undoubted progress being made over the past decades in crucial fields of medicine, despite the fact that we so often hear of new ‘major breakthroughs’ paving the way towards achieving a definitive cure for this or that disease, and despite the fact that our knowledge of the intimate mechanisms of the various diseases has increased enormously as a result of techniques of molecular biology, it has to be admitted that, as far as general practice and the vast majority of patients suffering from the chronic diseases are concerned which includes contamination of the environment by toxic agents, ever-growing numbers of diseases induced by increasingly potent drugs themselves, degenerative diseases to which errors of diet or life-style contribute, allergies, autoimmunity and immune deficiency, large numbers of neurological and psychiatric diseases, psychosomatic disorders, and tumors, the actual practical benefit of such knowledge is not exactly spectacular! Clinical Tips :

Clinical tip is a comprehensive suggestion of a clinical condition which many physicians and practitioners over the years have seen results for.

1. It is a platform for beginners to learn new scientific techniques in homoeopathy.

2. It is a platform where homoeopaths use these handy clinical tips in their regular practice and study effectiveness of remedies.

3. It is a platform for students to build a solid base to be a successful practitioner in future.

Remember, a tip is not the whole iceberg! Use these tips as part of a totality of symptoms. Let them inspire further research. Using specifics (“take this for that”) in isolation may prove disappointing and can lead to suppression.

Acne is one of the most common clinical conditions presenting in Homoeopathic OPD’S. It is also one of the most stubborn ailments to manage.
